The HongKong-Shenzhen Border
I love to develop stories of ordinary people in the current era. During a visit to Hong Kong in 2019, I had the opportunity to interview an 80-year-old man on his 13-day journey on foot from Shenzhen, then known as Bao’an, to Hong Kong, in 1978.
I visited some villages nearby the HongKong-Shenzhen border, like Liu Pok and Ma Tso Lung, which were the Frontier Closed Area before 2013.
On the Move
During the 1950s to 1970s, there was a huge wave of migration from Mainland China to Hong Kong. Most of them were originally from Guangdong Province and bravely chose land or water routes to Hong Kong.
Especially in 1979, fueled by rumors such as ‘Hong Kong will open its borders for three days during Queen Elizabeth's birthday’, the emigration wave reached its peak. Over two years, more than 200,000 people fled to Hong Kong.
